Most of this material was written last year when the Ontario Arts Council kindly gave me the opportunity to ignore some other worldly concerns for a brief period, and to concentrateon writing. "One Woman" was an almost forgotten song from my early days which was recorded at that time by an artist named Don Lange. "When I'm Gone" is a song which influenced my own formative writing years and which my old friend Mitch asked me to sing for his buddy Joe's memorial service last summer. I relearned it from a Phil Ochs songbook borrowed from Richard Carson in the early seventies...guess I should think about returning the book now I finally know why it was borrowed in the first place.

SARA AND THE SEA
SAMPLE
Sara goes down to the seaside
Picks a pebble to throw in the brine
She looks to the red sky and wonders
If her heart can be as true as the tide
True as the tide

And the sea gives up what is in each soul
And the mountains and sky do the same
And whatever we lose
As the shoreline moves
Can never be found again

A love was lost on a starry night
A love that was a s strong as the oak
A love that departed too early
A love that cannot now be known
Cannot now be known

For the sea gives up what is in each soul
And the mountains and sky do the same
And whatever we lose
As the shoreline moves
Can never be found again

The red sunset at the close of the day
Is as red as the reddest rose
A new day comes with the morning sun
New paths she's never known
Paths she's never known

LISA'S WALTZ
SAMPLE

(Instrumental)

THIS SONG'S FOR YOU
(HUGH'S SONG)

Everything is broken
But the clouds in the sky
The universe collapsed
Into the mind's eye

Nothing is the same
Since you left us that day
And nothing feels right
Since it turned out that way

And you left so much
But now that you're gone
There's not much to say
Except we're trying to move on
And all we can do is sing another song
The world spins and we must travel on

I'd have a too long month
With too little pay
A head full of words
With nothing to say

But you'd charm unruly spirits
With a story or two
I could feel the effects
But never saw the moves

And you left so much
But now that you're gone
There's not much to say
Except we're trying to move on
And all we can do is sing another song
The world spins and we must travel on

Now you're flying with angels
Given the devil what's true
I bet you rocked Charon's boat
Just to see what he would do

And here's to the times
That we all sang along
We wanted one for you
So we wrote down this song

And you left so much
But now that you're gone
There's not much to say
Except we're trying to move on
And all we can do is sing another song
The world spins and we must travel on

ONE WOMAN
One woman she stands in the cold winds
Another she hides from the storms
But I know one who's gone travellin
To find where it may be warm

She doesn't much care for your talk
She doesn't much care for a home
No she was born of the wild wild wood
Destined to forever roam

And oh how she dances in the moonlight
Where the stars can look down upon her there
And the earth it surrenders to the touch of her feet
And the four winds they blow back her hair

Now I guess that you could say we were happy
At least I can say for a time
But the urge it caught, it was time for go
I can never use that word mine

And oh how she dances in the moonlight
Where the stars can look down upon her there
And the earth it surrenders to the touch of her feet
And the four winds they blow back her hair

One woman she stands in the cold winds
Another she hides from the storms
But I know one who's gone travellin
To find where it may be warm

WHEN I'M GONE
SAMPLE
There's no place in this world I'll belong when I'm gone
And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone
You won't find me singin on this song when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't feel the flowing of the time when I'm gone
All the pleasures of love won't be mine when I'm gone
My pen won't pour the lyric line when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

I won't breathe the brandy air when I'm gone
And I can't even worry about my cares when I'm gone
Won't be asked to do my share when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

I won't be running from the rain when I'm gone
I can't even suffer from the pain when I'm gone
There's nothing I can lose or I can gain when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

Won't see the golden of the sun when I'm gone
And the evenings and the mornings will be one when I'm gone
Can't sing louder than the guns when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

All my days won't be dances of delight when I'm gone
And the sands will be shifting from my sight when I'm gone
Can't add my name into the fight when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone
Can't question how or when or why when I'm gone
Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

There's no place in this world I'll belong when I'm gone
And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone
You won't find me singin on this song when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

GONNA RIDE
THAT TRAIN

SAMPLE
We’re gonna ride that train
We’re not coming back
Gonna move out of here
On the two lane track
No more time to waste
No more time to hesitate
We’re just lookin for a break
And it better come pretty fast

The train pulls from the station
And grumbles down the track
In coach seats people dream of
Someday coming back
But foreign trawlers got the cod
Hollywood got the seals
It’s always been tough but it’s tougher now
So a man can’t even feel

And from the dim light smoker
We see another town
Where there’s no work left for the likes of us
Or a chance to settle down
There’s no work left in Calgary
Toronto ate us up
We pray with changing landscapes
There may be changing luck

And the churning discs go round and round
Gaining speed to the clicking sound
The whistle howls through frozen air
Winter snows can’t stop the stare
Of the big eye of the engine light
As it cuts through the cold New Brunswick night
And in the cars the people ride
Looking for another life

We’re gonna ride that train
We’re not coming back
Gonna move out of here
On the two lane track
No more time to waste
No more time to hesitate
We’re just lookin for a break
And it better come pretty fast

It seems that if you’re broke these days
You’re safer back at home
But just when you’re back
You hear wheels on the track
And wonder when you have to go

GHOSTS ON P.E.I.
Winter winds blow snow
'cross cut down barley stocks
Cold cuts through the clothes and skin
And heads straight for the heart

I remember desperate times
When love could not be caught
When only need was reigning
And love was just a thought

Only ghosts go fleeting by
When you do not choose to live
There are only alibis
And no love can you give

And I could only really cling
As you kept your heart whole
You were the nearest living thing
I nearly stole your soul

You were a young man's mystery
Far too true to share
And when I'd reach my arms for you
It's like I grasped at air

For you lived in the moment
I dwelled in a dream
You held your strength and kept it true
While I drove lies between - us

Only ghosts go fleeting by
When you do not choose to live
There are only alibis
And no love can you give

And I could only really cling
As you kept your heart whole
You were the nearest living thing
I nearly stole your soul

You were my lover and my foe
It wasn't easy to let go
Across the barley fields
The cold winds blow

PRAYER WATCHING
SAMPLE
I hear the prayers you breathe before you sleep
As you ask God for your soul to keep
And I wonder how in young years
You’ve found the things you say
And how you’ve brought to focus things
that could be far away

You ask for peace and hope
Across the oceans wide
And tell how all the war news
Makes you scared and want to hide
You ask how it could be
That someone takes another's life
Just because the other’s different
You ask God to make it right

I hear the prayers you breathe before you sleep
As you ask God for your soul to keep
And I wonder how in young years
You’ve found the things you say
And how you’ve brought to focus things
that could be far away

And now you speak of friends and family
And say thankyou for the day
You ask that we don’t argue
Or get in each other’s way
That we use the gifts we’re given
In the wisest way we can
And decisions that we make
Will all rest easy in God’s hand

You ask for homes for the homeless
For their warmth on colder nights
And you’re thankful for your food
And hope that others eat alright
You mention friends departed
And hope that God has made a place
Where they can all be happy
And our sorrows here replaced

I hear the prayers you breathe before you sleep
As you ask God for your soul to keep
And I wonder how in young years
You’ve found the things you say
And how you’ve brought to focus things
that could be far away

And in your eyes the universe unfolds
As you look up when your story’s told
To make sure that someone’s listening
To what you have to say
To send your feelings outward
And to see them on their way

Hold them close and keep them for another day

NO PERCENTAGE
IN BITTER

Walked out this morning
Barefoot on the dew
Saw the flowers blooming
Something driving their green fuse

And the force that pulls us onward
Is nothing you can name
The world is always spinning
Nothing stays the same

There's no percentage in bitter
You just gotta let it go
There's nothing you can do nothing you can say
There's a drive to the status quo

And the only place to dwell in
Is that place only you can see
Just move on
Be what you can be

Down along the boardwalks
People come and go
Talking about poetry
And Michaelangelo

Sunlight on sunglasses Filters for the soul
Protection fully guaranteed
There's nothing new to know

There's no percentage in bitter
You just gotta let it go
There's nothing you can do nothing you can say
There's a drive to the status quo

The only place to dwell in
Is that place only you can see
Just move on
Be what you can be

Along the streets and avenues
You choose where you will be
You can duck inside an alley
Or head out for high street
